How to Make an Appointment at CAPS

 

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers a variety of services. Here's how to access the care that's right for you:

  •       In-Person Counseling
  •       Virtual Counseling (via TimelyCare)
  •       Urgent or Crisis Support
  •       Psychiatric Services (Medication Management)
  •       Therapy Groups and Workshops
  •       Referrals to the Community

In-Person Counseling

To begin in-person services at CAPS, your first step is to schedule an Initial Meeting with a counselor. In this session, you’ll talk through your concerns, explore treatment options, and decide on next steps—such as ongoing individual or group therapy.

How to schedule:

    • Call: 631-632-6720, or
    • Visit: Student Health Services, 2nd Floor, 1 Stadium Drive
    • Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM–5:00 PM (closed 12:00-1:00)
  • Summer Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00-4:00 (closed 12:00-1:00)

 

Virtual Counseling (via TimelyCare)

Prefer remote support? CAPS partners with TimelyCare to offer 24/7 virtual mental health services, including scheduled counseling and on-demand support.

Get started:

  • Visit timelycare.com/stonybrook, or
  • Download the TimelyCare app (available on iOS and Android)
  • Register using your Stony Brook email address 

 

Urgent or Crisis Support

If you need to speak with someone immediately:

  • During office hours:

    Call us at 631-632-6720 or visit the CAPS office in person. Tell the receptionist it’s an emergency, and that you’d like to speak with someone right now.
  • After hours (Monday to Friday, 4:30 pm to 8:30 am, Saturday and Sunday - all day)

    Call the CAPS Crisis Line at 855-509-5742 or dial 631-632-6720 to be connected to after-hours support.
  • For life-threatening emergencies: Call University Police at 631-632-3333 right away.

 

Psychiatric Services (Medication Management)

If you're interested in meeting with a psychiatrist to discuss medication:

  • Call: 631-632-6720, or
  • Visit: Student Health Services, 2nd Floor, 1 Stadium Drive
  • Let the receptionist know you’re seeking psychiatric services

 

Therapy Groups and Workshops

CAPS offers a variety of therapeutic groups and workshops focused on shared experiences and personal growth.

To join a group:

  • Call: 631-632-6720
  • Let the receptionist know which group you’re interested in
  • You’ll be connected to the group’s facilitator to discuss next steps

 

Referrals to the Community

CAPS can help you find community services.

To ask for help with referrals
