Mission Statement
Psychology seeks to explain the biological, cognitive, social, and clinical aspects of behavior, thought, and emotion, using scientific methods. Because of the nature of psychology, it is essential for research and training in psychological science to include a diverse and representative pool of people, including the scholars we train, the participants in our research, and the people and communities we serve. Stony Brook University's Psychology Department prepares students to pursue their academic and career goals, with an appreciation of the breadth of human diversity and lived experiences.
The Department of Psychology offers graduate training in four areas of study:
Clinical Psychological Science
Our graduate programs have, as their foundation, rigorous training in science and research. Students are admitted to work with a faculty mentor and are trained to conduct independent research. Collaboration with other labs is welcomed to foster development of expertise in areas relevant to each student's interests.
Graduates from the program are prepared for careers in academic and applied settings, including universities, colleges, medical centers, hospitals, clinics, research and governmental organizations, and business and industry.
The Psychology Department accepts applications for its 4 Ph.D. programs and for the Master's (M.A.) Program. Most information on this site pertains to requirements for the Ph.D. programs. For further information about the M.A. Program, see the MA Webpage.
