Honors Program
Section 1: Eligibility
To qualify for the History Honors Program, you must:
Have at least a 3.5 GPA in History courses (and related disciplines that count toward the major).
Have at least a 3.0 overall GPA.
Be entering your senior year.
Have completed HIS 301 before applying.
Section 2: Advisor Requirement
Before submitting this form, you must:
Identify a prospective faculty advisor willing to supervise your thesis.
Provide your advisor with an unofficial transcript and a writing sample.
Section 3: Honors Project Proposal
After gaining your advisor’s consent, you must:
Submit an honors project proposal describing the merit of your planned research.
Have your advisor submit a supporting statement.
Both of these steps must happen in the semester before enrolling in HIS 495.
Section 4: Coursework
You must enroll in HIS 495 (Fall of senior year) and HIS 496 (Spring of senior year).
These courses are in addition to the regular History major requirements.
Honors does not replace the Capstone Seminar (HIS 401).
Recommendation: Take HIS 401 in the Fall semester alongside HIS 495.
Under unusual circumstances (e.g., student teaching), HIS 495/496 may be taken in
the two semesters before graduation, with approval from the Undergraduate Program
Director.
Section 5: Thesis & Deadlines
Thesis length: 25–40 pages, with footnotes and bibliography in Chicago style.
Thesis will be evaluated by your advisor, a second faculty reader, and the Undergraduate
Director.
Deadlines:
May graduation: Draft by March 15, revised draft by April 15.
December graduation: Draft by October 15, revised draft by November 15.
Final version must be submitted to the Director of Undergraduate Studies by the Monday of the final week of classes(not exam week).
