Code of Conduct

This code of conduct is to affirm and remind all members of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, including faculty, staff and students, of professional and appropriate conduct and behaviors.

Although only the University Policy holds legal force, and disciplinary procedures are prescribed by the Contract Agreement between United University Professions (UUP) and the State University of New York (SUNY), this code of conduct complements such policies and serves as a guideline as we work together to make the college a more understanding, inclusive, supportive, and fair place for all.

This code of conduct provides some general reminders for behavior, followed by more specific expectations for faculty, staff and students. If you believe an unacceptable behavior has occurred, please report to the CEAS Dean, the University Ombuds Office, or the University’s OEA Services.

General Guidelines

CEAS faculty, staff, and students are expected to contribute to a collaborative academic environment and interact in a respectful and ethical manner, maintaining collegiality and professionalism. All members of the college community should treat others with respect and ensure that interactions are free from discrimination or harassment based on race, gender, or any other personal characteristics. Responsible conduct of research, fair authorship practices, and adherence to safety regulations are expected for all who conduct research and scholarly work. Proper and responsible use of laboratories, funding, technology, and facilities is also expected. Faculty and staff must disclose any potential conflicts of interest that could impact their work.

• Expectations for CEAS Faculty
  • Conduct teaching, research, and service with the highest integrity, adhering to ethical guidelines and principles.
  • Ensure transparency, accuracy, and honesty in all scholarly activities.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students, promoting continuous improvement, prioritizing student success by fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment.
  • Stay informed of advancements in the field to ensure curriculum relevance and quality.
  • Provide fair and impartial service to your department and the college, upholding trust and equity. Value and recognize the contributions of colleagues in various capacities, ensuring equitable workload distribution.
  • Treat students, staff, and colleagues with respect, dignity, and professionalism. Address conflicts constructively, maintaining open communication and respect. 
• Expectations for CEAS Staff
  • Perform duties outlined in the job description with professionalism, honesty, and dedication.
  • Be available and approachable to assist students, faculty, and colleagues in academic activities with timeliness and professionalism.
  • Treat all members of the college community—students, staff, and faculty—with courtesy and respect. 
• Expectations for CEAS Students
  •  No plagiarism, dishonesty, or misrepresentation in coursework, research, or any academic activities.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and maturity in interactions and communications; treat fellow students, staff, and faculty with respect.
  • Respect the learning environment, attend classes, and maintain collegiality and professionalism in classrooms.
