Major Requirements
The major in sociology leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree. Completion of the major
requirements entails 39 credits, of which 27 - 30 are in sociology courses.
A. Study within the Area of the Major
Only six credits of independent study course:
447, 487, 488, 495, and 496 may be used toward the requirement of 18 elective credits
in sociology.
SOC 475 and 476 do not count toward the elective requirements.
B. Study in Related Areas
Three courses (nine credits) chosen from one of the following related social sciences:
Africana studies (only those courses with designator AFS), anthropology (ANT only),
economics, history, linguistics, political science, psychology, social sciences, and
women's studies.
C. Upper-Division Writing Requirement
Sociology majors will fulfill the WRTD requirement when they take SOC 361, Historical Theory.
Transfer students who have fulfilled their theory requirement at a different university
should connect with the
Director of Undergraduate Studies on alternate steps to fulfill the writing requirement.
Grading Policy
- All sociology courses offered in satisfaction of major requirements must be passed with a grade of C or higher.
- Only one elective can be taken Pass/No Credit. All required courses must be taken for a letter grade.
- No transferred sociology course with a grade lower than C is accepted for credit in the major.
Note: The Sociology Department requires that transfer students take at least 12 credits in sociology in residence at Stony Brook to complete the sociology major.
