Crisis Internvention Team (CIT) Training
Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) is a training program within the University Police Department dedicated to improving communication and collaboration, identifying effective and timely mental health resources for those in crisis, reducing trauma, and ensuring officer and community safety. It is the goal of the Stony Brook University Police Department to deliver the nationally approved curriculum sponsored by CIT International to our officers to provide a safer and more effective response to individuals in crisis.
CIT Programs are community-driven initiatives that bring together law enforcement, mental health and addiction professionals, individuals living with mental illness and/or substance use disorders, their families, and other partners to enhance community responses to mental health crises.
CIT training promotes crisis responses grounded in de-escalation techniques, informed understanding, and timely access to appropriate resources. Through training, collaboration, and proactive engagement, CIT enhances both safety and well-being across the university community.
CIT is more than just training- it’s a collaborative partnership dedicated to improving lives through awareness, education, and advocacy.
