                                 representation. July 27, 1962: I. William Bianchi and Quentin B. Sammis filed a federal lawsuit against
                                 the county's board of supervisors, alleging it violates one-person, one-vote representation.
 April 5, 1968: U.S. Second Court of Appeals ordered the county board to reapportion
                                 itself.
 August 1968: Suffolk Board of Supervisors approves creation of 18-district legislature
 November 1968: Suffolk voters approve the new governmental system. A ballot measure
                                 to allow the East End to secede from Suffolk fails.
 November 1969: First legislature election. Seventeen men and one woman, all Republicans
                                 and Conservatives, are elected.
 Jan. 1, 1970: Legislature replaces board of supervisors.
 Jan. 13, 1970: First general meeting of the legislature.
 1975: Democrats take majority of legislature for first time.
 1977: Legislative Budget Review Office created .
 Feb. 1, 1988: First female presiding officer is Sandra Bachety.
