Historical Note
This document is an indenture or contract from the Board of Trustees of the town of
Huntington, New York approving the sale of a lot of land in the East Neck to Ananias
Carll on June 7, 1773. The document outlines the boundaries of Carll’s new holding
and guarantees his and his family’s rights to the property.
Ananias Carll was born on April 25, 1733 and died on August 22nd, 1801. He is buried in Long Swamp Cemetery, South Huntington, New York [1]. During the 1780s and 90s, he served as both an Assessor for Huntington and on the Board of Trustees [2]. Of the town Trustees, Henry Scudder (1743-1822) was involved in the American Revolution, being captured by the British at the Battle of Long Island before he was released. Scudder fled to Connecticut and was involved in military raids on Long Island. After the war, Scudder was involved in the framing of New York State’s Constitution and represented Suffolk County in the State Legislature [3]. Similarly, Huntington Board of Trustees President Israel Wood oversaw the passing of a resolution in 1774 outlining grievances against British policies in colonial America known as Huntington’s Declaration of Rights [4]. Solomon Ketcham (1724-1781), in addition to being a Trustee, was a Huntington farmer and slave owner. Comments left by descendants also suggest that he served in the American Revolution [5].
