What is Pre-Orientation?
International Student Pre-Orientation is a 3-day extended orientation1 open to new undergraduate freshman international students to support your transition to university life in the US.  You'll connect with essential resources for academic success, cultural adjustment, and community building through interactive and engaging workshops, activities, and field trips.

This program is a fantastic opportunity to explore and understand your new home so you'll feel better prepared, connected, and excited for the semester ahead! 

 

lnternational Student Pre-Orientation is open to students who are:

    • New Admitted Undergraduate Freshman International Students for Fall 2026
  • Living on campus during the Fall 2026 semester
  • Able to arrive at the start of the program (Aug. 14, 2026)
  • Excited to get the most out of their Stony Brook experience!

Space is limited and students who submit the application will be notified of their acceptance.  Students committed to International Pre-Orientation by May 18 receive priority housing selection!

$275 Program Fee is all inclusive!2  The program fee includes:

  • Airport transportation from JFK on Friday, August 14
  • On campus housing
  • Some meals
  • Transportation to NYC
  • Group admission to the Summit at One Vanderbilt

Application Deadline:  May 10, 2026 at 11:59 PM Eastern

Students will be notified by May 15 if they are accepted.  

Program Fee Payment  Deadlines:  May 18, 2026

Priority Housing Selection: May 20 - 26, 2026

Participating students will live in the Roosevelt Quad.  Roosevelt Quad offers close access to West Side Dining and the Al DeVries Center facilities; and a choice of Single, Double, and Triple room options in a corridor-style arrangement.

Program Highlights

Academic Preparation Workshops

Small group sessions led by faculty and staff focusing on academic success and classroom preparation.

Cultural and Social Acclimation

Learn about adjusting to life at Stony Brook, navigating cultural differences, and using campus resources.

Peer-Led Support

Our Peer Mentors will guide you through the weekend, sharing their experiences, offering guidance, and answering questions.  

Interactive Activities and Field Trips

Meet fellow international students, engage in fun evening activities, and create a support network before the semester begins.  Our Peer Mentors will also lead you on a day trip to NYC where you can explore landmarks and learn to navigate the trains and city.

Notes
1. International Student Pre-Orientation is an additional experience to provide enhanced preparation for new international students. Students are still required to attend New Student Orientation events and activities starting August 18, 2026. 

2. Program Fee is in addition to the New Student Fee.  Participants are still required to pay the New Student  Fee by the July 1 deadline.
