The Humanities Institute at Stony Brook announces a competition for faculty in humanities departments to be selected for a month-long residential fellowship at the National Humanities Center (NHC) in North Carolina in Summer 2026.
Lecturers and adjuncts with a PhD in a humanities discipline are eligible to apply to be nominated. Chairs of humanities departments may nominate one candidate from their department to stand for the fellowship. A selection committee composed of the Humanities Institute Advisory Board will select one (1) nominee from the resulting pool to send to the NHC in North Carolina from June 1-26, 2026. Tuition, lodging, and some travel expenses are paid from the fellowship. Travel from the scholar’s home to the NHC is not included. The cost of the $8,000 fellowship is supported equally through cost sharing between
the Office of the Provost, the College of Arts and Science, the faculty's home department,
and HISB.
Scholars interested in being nominated for the NHC Summer Residency Fellowship should
contact their department chairs and provide the following:

- a one-page project statement
- a current CV

Chairs should send their nomination to the HISB Advisory Board selection committee (by way of HISB Program Coordinator Adrienne Unger at adrienne.unger@stonybrook.edu) no later than 5:00pm Monday, November 10, 2025.The selected SBU nominee will be notified by late November and their name sent to NHC.
In late November 2025, the NHC will send the nominee scholar a unique link to the application portal. Complete applications must be submitted by early January 2026 (with the exact date TBD). The 40 residency participants will be competitively selected from this pool of applicants, however as a President’s Circle Sponsor, SBU is guaranteed a spot in the residency if submitted by the deadline.
