Marija Iloska: Making the Most of What We Can't See

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition challenges SBU graduate students to present their dissertation research findings to a general audience in just three minutes, using only one PowerPoint slide. The goal is to engage all their communication skills to make their research vivid and engaging while emphasizing its key point without jargon.

This year, two exceptional PhD students from the Electrical & Computer Engineering department, Laiba Bilal and Marija Iloska, made their mark in the SBU 3MT 2024 event.

Marija Iloska advanced to Round 2 with her talk "Making the Most of What We Can’t See"

Marija Iloska, a brilliant PhD student from the Electrical & Computer Engineering department, advanced to Round 2 with her talk titled “Making the Most of What We Can’t See”. Marija’s research revolves around improving machine predictions. She designs mathematical tools to find patterns in data, helping machines make better and timely predictions.

From distinguishing between a healthy baby’s heart rate and one that needs immediate medical attention, to differentiating between a rain shower and an extreme flood, Marija’s work aims to enhance the accuracy of machine predictions that impact our daily lives. Marija's Advisor is Mónica Bugallo.

Laiba Bilal is awarded People's Choice for her talk "Unlocking Xenon’s Super Powers"

Laiba Bilal, a student of Electrical & Computer Engineering, was awarded the People’s Choice award for her talk titled “Unlocking Xenon’s Super Powers”. In her talk, Laiba introduced us to the world of noble gases, specifically xenon, and its many hidden superpowers. From making people sleepy during surgeries to powering spacecrafts, and even treating brain injuries and lung diseases, xenon’s potential is vast. Laiba’s research focuses on capturing xenon in nano cages, much like catching fireflies in a jar, for later use in various settings. Her innovative approach to xenon trapping could lead to significant improvements in medicine, space exploration, and a clean and green future. Laiba's advisors are Anibal Boscoboinik & Mónica Bugallo.

The achievements of Laiba and Marija at the SBU 3MT 2024 event are a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the excellent coaching from their advisors at Stony Brook. Their success serves as an inspiration for their peers and future participants of the 3MT competition. We look forward to seeing more of their groundbreaking research in the future.
