Meet Solar Racing!

The Stony Brook Solar Racing Team is a competitive organization at Stony Brook University. Students work together to design, build, and test a solar-powered race boat, with the aim of competing at two national competitions held in April and June.

MISSON

The Stony Brook Solar Racing Team is an interdisciplinary student-run competitive organization at Stony Brook University. Students work together to research, design, produce, and test a solar-electric race boat for competition. Working independently in our machine shop, we produce a majority of the vessel in-house, such as motor controllers, drivetrain, composite molds, solar panels, control system, and various other mechanical/electrical devices. We also have many related research opportunities outside of the scope of competition, such as high voltage EVs and cutting-edge renewable energy.

First competing in 1998, the Solar Racing Team competes at the annual Solar Splash Competition. In addition to attending competition, we host a variety of workshops and side projects throughout the year to help team members learn about sustainable transportation, alternative energy, 3D CAD software, Arduino, web-dev, and more.
