How did you hear about Stony Brook?
Growing up on Long Island, Stony Brook was always a well-known and respected university. I applied during the COVID-19 pandemic when I was uncertain about where I wanted to attend college, and ultimately Stony Brook felt like the right fit for me.
Why Stony Brook?
It was important to me to support public higher education while also attending a university that offered a Korean Studies program. Stony Brook gave me the opportunity to explore both of those interests while receiving a strong education close to home.
On her major:
I originally entered Stony Brook as a Biology major, but after taking general education courses, I realized my passions were more aligned with history, culture, and education. I chose to major in History with a specialization in Race, Gender, and Sexuality because I wanted to better understand how historical systems and social movements shape the world we live in today.
I also pursued a minor in Korean Studies because of my interest in Korean language, history, and culture. In addition, I joined the Social Studies Teacher Preparation Program because I want to dedicate my career to supporting and empowering students from disadvantaged backgrounds through education.
What degree are you graduating with?
I am graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Favorite classes:
One of my favorite classes was HIS 325: Civil Rights and Black Power because it expanded both my understanding of U.S. history and my worldview. Another class that had a major impact on me was KOR 331: The Unending Korean War. The course explored how the war has been remembered and challenged dominant narratives surrounding U.S. involvement and historical memory.
Interests and accomplishments:
Outside of academics, I enjoy stationery, gardening, reading, and exploring new places. One of my biggest accomplishments during college was studying abroad in South Korea during the summer of 2023, which allowed me to grow both academically and personally. I was also honored to receive the Korean Studies Undergraduate Scholarship for Academic Achievement and Leadership. In addition, I was actively involved in the SBU Greenhouse Club, serving on the executive board for all four years of my undergraduate experience.
Plans for post-graduation:
After graduation, I will be moving to San Diego and hope to begin my career as a full-time social studies teacher. While searching for a teaching position, I plan to begin graduate school and work part-time, ideally at a plant store, since I love plants.
Advice for future Seawolves:
It is completely normal to be unsure about your major at first. Do not be afraid to take classes that genuinely interest you because they may lead you toward passions you did not expect. I also encourage students to fully utilize all of Stony Brook’s resources and opportunities. If possible, I highly recommend studying abroad as it was one of the most meaningful experiences of my college career.
Favorite SBU memory:
My favorite Stony Brook memory was studying abroad in South Korea during the summer of 2023. It was my first time traveling internationally without my family, and it became a once-in-a-lifetime experience that helped me better understand both myself and the culture I was studying.
Parting thoughts:
My time at Stony Brook taught me the importance of staying disciplined and open to
change. I entered college with one path in mind and graduated with entirely different
passions, goals, and experiences that have shaped who I am today. I wish all current
and future Seawolves the best of luck in their future endeavors!
