Matt Tomich

President

Energy Vision

Matt is the president of the national environmental research group Energy Vision (EV), where his focus has been on the advancement of sustainable transportation solutions, especially for difficult to decarbonize heavy-duty trucks and buses. Much of his work at EV has looked at the production and use of ultra-low-carbon renewable natural gas made from organic waste as a vehicle fuel. Tomich has been instrumental in expanding Energy Vision's various regional, national and international education, outreach and advisory initiatives. His research and writing have appeared in numerous publications, including GreenBiz, The Hill, TriplePundit and BioCycle, and he has presented on sustainable waste management and low-carbon transportation at multiple venues in North America, Asia and Africa. Matt earned a B.A. in Geology from Haverford College, and an M.B.A. from Kansas State University. In 2015, he was named one of New York City's Top 10 Energy Entrepreneurs by the publication Breaking Energy.

The transportation sector is now the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, surpassing power generation for the first time in 2017. Advances in fuel economy and light- and medium-duty vehicle electrification hold promise, but heavy-duty buses and trucks — 4% of on-road vehicles but consumers of 25% of on-road fuel — remain difficult to decarbonize, technologically and economically. Despite these challenges, ultra-low-carbon renewable natural gas (RNG) is a quickly emerging option to cost-effectively achieve climate goals in the transportation sector. Produced anywhere organic waste decomposes — landfills, wastewater facilities, and agricultural operations — the production and use of RNG in vehicles equipped with advanced natural gas engines also represents an opportunity to generate new sources of revenue – on farms as well as in towns and cities. This presentation will shed light on the RNG vehicle fuel opportunity by highlighting industry growth, short case studies, and the economic and environmental benefits associated with this emerging strategy.
