How Liquid Cooling Helped Two University Data Centers Achieve Cooling Efficiency Goals

Abstract: Energy and cooling management within data centers is evolving. The removal of heat generated by computing, networking, and storage equipment from the data center is changing from the practice of exclusively moving chilled air to also include the removal of heat by liquid cooling. Two different Universities had different operating issues but shared the same goal achieve the most energy efficient data center possible. In both cases the decision was made to deploy a liquid cooling system using rear door heat exchangers (RDHx). The key decision criteria for choosing this cooling solution will be reviewed. The RDHx cooling system will be evaluated in light of the University's performance goals.
