Reza Ghafurian

Technical Leader, Central Engineering, Consolidated Edison Company of New York

Dr. Reza Ghafurian received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of London, Imperial College of Science and Technology in UK. He was an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Iowa State University, Ames, prior to joining Con Edisonís R&D Department in 1985. Dr. Ghafurian became Manager of Transmission Engineering in 1999 and was recognized in March 2006 for his expertise and leadership skills by being promoted to Technical Leader for Underground Transmission. In May 2007, he assumed the responsibility for establishing and heading the new Third Generation (3G) System of the Future Department. Dr. Ghafurian is an IEEE Fellow and Con Edison representative at industry organizations including EPRI and AEIC. He is the recipient of several awards and has published more than 25 technical papers in the fields of underground transmission and power system analysis.

Smart Grid In Urban Environment

The presentation will focus on Con Edisonís on-going smart grid demonstrations. Results of the pilot demonstration in a large distribution network will be presented, which includes several functionalities of smart grid such as; smart meter technology, demand response and customer in home technologies, integration of distributed energy resources, and monitoring and control of underground distribution equipment. In addition, the presentation will cover implementation of new smart grid technologies that address distribution automation. Lessons learned to-date and implication for future needs will be discussed.
