Administrative Hearing Board Volunteers

• What does an Administrative Hearing Board member do?

  Hearing board members allow students the right to be heard by other University community members in situations where they have been charged with violating the Code of Student Responsibility.  Hearing board members are trained and are responsible for reviewing all presented information and determining whether a student has violated a policy and recommending sanctions when applicable.

• What is the Code of Student Responsibility?

  The Code of Student Responsibility provides the policies and procedures governing student behavior at Stony Brook University. The Code also describes the process whereby students can file a complaint when their rights as members of the University community may been violated by other students.

• How many people are on the board?

  The Administrative hearing board consists of three to five students, staff and faculty members.

• Is it a large time commitment, and will I miss my classes?

  No. Administrative Hearings are scheduled based upon the number of cases, and availability of board members.

• How do I apply?

  Visit the application page and fill out the online form. Selection of Board Members will be based upon application, interest, and an interview.

• What are the benefits of Board Member participation?

  Students who serve on the hearing board gain valuable leadership, critical thinking and reasoning skills, and contribute to the development of responsible student behavior.

• Our Philosophy

  The student conduct process is designed to be primarily educational in nature. Through our interactions with students, we strive to support student success and the educational mission of the University. Toward this goal, our process is designed to provide students with opportunities for dialogue and reflection and to promote the development of responsible behavior and decision making skills.
