Internship FAQs
                  Educational Leadership (EDL) Program
The Educational Leadership (combined school district and school building) has a six-credit
internship requirement. EDL students fulfill this requirement by taking EDL 585 Internship
in School District/School Building Leadership and EDL 586 Seminar in School District/School
Building Leadership. The courses must be taken concurrently over the course of one
                     semester and one summer.
The internship experience runs for 7 months which allows time for the intern to put
into practice at both building and district levels what was learned in the courses
regarding administrative practice. Interns are encouraged to work with multiple administrators
                     in multiple settings.
In addition, there are field hours embedded in each course through authentic activities.
These field hours and the EDL internship are typically completed within the school
district in which the student works.

When am I eligible to complete the internship portion of the program?

Students are eligible to complete their internship after they have 27 credits completed
(including EDL 501, 502 & 503 for EDL and EDL Online students, and EDL 501 & 502 for
SDBL students).  For the spring/summer internship 27 credits must be completed by
the end of the fall semester and for the summer/fall internship 27 credits must be
completed by the end of the spring semester.

                        When is the internship offered?

The internship is only offered over a spring/summer or summer/fall term. It is not
                                 offered during the fall/spring.

Where will I be able to complete my internship?

Students typically complete their internship within the district where they are currently
                                 employed.

How many hours are needed to complete the EDL or SDBL internship?

The EDL internship has a number of smaller requirements but the majority of the work
will be a minimum of 300 management hours at both the building and district levels
and 3 comprehensive projects. For the SDBL internship interns must become proficient
in 75 competencies that cover all the responsibilities of becoming a business leader.

When will I begin the process of applying for the internship?

Two announcements go to ALL students in the program inviting them to apply for the
appropriate internship when they have completed the necessary 27 credits. The first
announcement is sent out May 1st for the summer/fall internship and the second announcement
is sent out November 1 for the spring/summer internship.

What happens next after I notify Dr. Scheidet?

It is imperative that students respond to these announcements immediately as they
will be entering a month long proposal stage. During the month students must meet
with administrators to line up internship work, develop two comprehensive projects,
develop a goal statement, and obtain administrative signatures on the required application.
This takes time and there is a deadline for submitting all items for approval.

I am currently in an administrative position. Will my internship be waived?

If a student is currently working in an administrative position they will not be granted
a waiver for their internship. Twenty-five percent (25%) of the internship hours can
be derived from work done in this administrative position.
