SPRING SEMESTER enrollment appointments begin on Monday, November 3, based upon seniority by credits. 

• The class schedule is available on SOLAR a week before registration begins.
• The Undergraduate Bulletin which includes majors, minors, course descriptions, and pre-requisites is available at www.stonybrook.edu/bulletin. 
• Please view the Registrar's Academic Calendar for information on enrollment dates and credit limits.

Log into SOLAR to make sure you don’t have any holds that will prevent you from registering on time, including any balance due on your account.  To register for classes, you must have a zero balance due.  Resolve any financial issues now so that you do not miss out on classes that fill up quickly.

On SOLAR, your holds will be listed on the left-hand side of the screen.  Click on the hold and it will bring you to a screen that explains what the hold is and how to resolve it:

Academic advising units will have advising hours to assist you in course selection and academic planning during registration.  Find your general academic advisor and your major/minor advisor locations. 

Check SOLAR to review your degree progress report on Degree Works and verify what requirements you have met, what are in progress, and what still needs to be completed.  For step-by-step instructions, please visit the stonybrook.edu/advisingmedia site.

You must complete the following to earn your Stony Brook undergraduate degree:

1.  Your major (and minor, specialization, or concentration if required by your major)

2.  Your SBC or DEC & skill general education requirements, depending upon when you started at Stony Brook.  (Your degree progress report will identify which requirements you are following.)

3.  120 total credits (128 for Bachelor of Engineering degrees)

4.  39 upperdivision credits (courses at the 300-level or higher)

5.  2.0 minimum cumulative GPA

6.  36 residency credits (meaning that after finishing your 57th credit, you complete at least 36 more credits at Stony Brook.)

Check SOLAR to verify your major on your transcript or Degree Works progress report.  If you are pursuing a different major or adding a major/minor, go to www.stonybrook.edu/registrar/forms/forms.php, click on "Undergraduate" and "Major/Minor Declaration Form", and visit the respective academic department for the faculty member’s signature. Then submit the signed form to the Registrar's Office, Stony Brook Union. 

Use SOLAR to select classes and hold them in your “shopping cart.”  This way, when your enrollment appointment date/time begins, you are ready to submit your courses quickly.  If there is a closed course you need for timely graduation, add yourself to the course waitlist (if there is an active waitlist).  Please view the tutorials further down on this page.

Please review the Registrar's final exam schedule to know in advance when (and how many finals) you will have each day.

A credit limit ensures equity in the registration process. Students can initially enroll in a maximum of 17 credits for the fall and spring semesters, which then increases closer to the start of the semester. Certain programs have exceptions to these limits. 

Please refer to the Bulletin for information on credit limits and the Registrar's Academic Calendar for information on the timeline for credit limit increases.

Students on first semester warning, warning, and probation are limited to 16 credits each fall and spring semester. 

Check SOLAR to review your Degree Works progress report and ensure you will complete all general education and major requirements.  Once you have at least a 2.0 GPA and 105 earned or in-progress credits, apply for graduation on SOLAR.

Transfer credits, pending approval, may be applied toward major, minor, and/or general education requirements.  Transfer courses are not included in the Stony Brook GPA and require a grade or C or better.  

To obtain Stony Brook credit for a course at another college or university within the United States, check the transfer database at www.stonybrook.edu/transfer to see if the course you wish to take has already been approved and evaluated.  If the course is not on this list, please consult with an academic advisor in Academic & Transfer Advising Services and complete a Transfer Credit Evaluation form PRIOR to enrolling in the course.

To obtain Stony Brook credit for a summer or winter course at a college or university outside of the United States, Stony Brook students are required to participate in an approved partner university program offered through International Academic Programs (IAP) in the Office of Global Affairs. All other international credits obtained in the summer or winter will NOT be eligible as transfer credit applied to your Stony Brook degree program. This also includes international credits taken from U.S. institutions outside of IAP or SUNY. New York State residents participating in an IAP approved international program pay the in-state tuition rate for coursework; all other students participating in an IAP approved international summer program pay the out-of-state tuition rate for coursework.  Please review details on international credits here and visit the www.stonybrook.edu/studyabroad for information on IAP approved programs, costs, and scholarships.

If you are a New York State (NYS) resident seeking TAP or Excelsior, review your TAP Summary page and your Excelsior Summary page on SOLAR to verify that you have met all criteria.  You must be enrolled as a full-time student taking 12 or more credits applicable toward the degree program per semester to receive TAP, Excelsior, or NYS Scholarships.  Credit-bearing courses in your minimum full-time course load (12 semester hours or the equivalent) must consist of courses applicable to your program of study as an SBC or DEC requirement, major requirement, or elective (if applicable).  Credits that are being used for a minor and/or specialization on record may NOT be counted as part of your 12 degree applicable credits for TAP UNLESS the minor and/or specialization is required for your major.  For more information, visit http://www.stonybrook.edu/registrar/tap.shtml

Students who wish to retake a course (second attempt) may begin retake registration on or about August 15 for fall classes and on or about January 20 for spring classes, after all first-time takers have had an opportunity to register and pending an available seat. Please review the academic calendar for the specific dates.

Some classes are designated as "high demand" or "HDCA" courses.  It is less likely there will be available seats in these classes -- and there is no guarantee of a seat for any course.  If no seats are available when you attempt to register, you can add yourself to the course waitlist (if one exists).  You may want to retake classes in winter and summer, when there are often more seats available. 

If you wish to retake a course for a third or more time, you must submit a request form to the academic department offering the course.  Third or more approved attempts cannot be processed (pending an open seat) until the retake date outlined in the academic calendar.

You are not permitted to select the grade/pass/no credit (G/P/NC) option for course retakes. 

If you retake a course in which you earned a P, S, or D or better on the first attempt, you cannot earn credit a second time.  Course retake grades appear on the transcript, along with the grade on the first attempt, and all attempts are factored into your cumulative GPA.
