Historical NoteDr. Sanford (Sandy) J. Brown was Stony Brook undergraduate student from 1964 through
1968. The materials in this collection pertain to the 1968 issue of the Stony Brook
University literary annual Soundings, of which Dr. Brown was that year's editor. It was an anti-Vietnam War issue and
on his own Dr. Brown sent copies to every U.S. Senator, President Lyndon B. Johnson,
and Vice President Hubert Humphrey. Brown received replies from 23 senators (including
Jacob K. Javits), Vice President Humphrey, and the President's personal secretary,
                                 Juanita Roberts.

In an effort to contextualize these 25 letters, Noyo Hill House, a nonprofit public
benefit 501(c)(3) corporation for the preservation of perishable historical materials,
located in Fort Bragg, CA, conducted a recorded interview with Dr. Brown about his
personal background, his time at Stony Brook, the 1968 issue of Soundings and his correspondence with senators and the White House. They also interviewed him
regarding his medical school experiences and subsequent career as a physician. A transcript
of this interview accompanies the letters.
