Historical NoteBenjamin A. Nelson (1926-2001) began his career in the AIDC industry with the Markem
corporation, a manufacturer of industrial printing machines, working in the sales
and marketing division. In 1969, while with Markem, he became involved in the first
U.P.C. and LOGMARS tests. As his involvement with the industry expanded, Mr. Nelson
was asked to serve on several industry trade associations (APICS, IMMS), was a valued
member of the Industry Advisory Board of the School of Packaging at Michigan State
University and ID Systems Magazine, and frequently lectured at the University of Wisconsin
Management Institute. Mr. Nelson served for two terms on the Board of Directors for
the Automatic Identification Manufacturers Association. He was also a prolific writer
for ID System Magazine and was awarded the prestigious Richard Dilling Award in 1985
for his efforts to create a curriculum on bar coding at the School of Packaging at
Michigan State University. In 1995, after 42 years with the Markem Corporation, Mr.
Nelson retired and started Nelson Associates, a consulting firm dedicated to educating
the private and public sectors on the benefits of AIDC technologies. Soon after, in
1997, he became a co-founder with George Goldberg and Chet Benoit of the orhanization
AIDC 100. He worked in this capacity until his death in 2001.
Text from plaque in honor of Benjamin Nelson: "Ben Nelson was an active and positive
presence in the AIDC industry from its inception in the 1970s. He was known worldwide
for his memorable seminars on the basics of bar code symbology and printing. In 1997,
Ben authored the important reference book, “Punched Card to Bar Codes.” His humor,
warmth, kindness and integrity forged a rock-solid, lasting bond with all who knew
him. Ben was a co-founder of AIDC 100 in 1997 and remained a driving, inspirational
force in the organization until his untimely passing. He will be sorely missed by
his friends and associates."  SubjectsNelson, Benjamin, 1926-2001.
