Historical Note Chester “Chet” N. Benoit (1925–2021) was an early and influential figure in the automatic
identification and data capture (AIDC) industry, which includes barcodes and related
technologies. After graduating from Tufts University and serving in the U.S. Army
during World War II, he spent roughly 45 years in sales and marketing in the electrical
and electronic controls field. Later in his career, he worked for Welch Allyn’s Electronics
Division, an important early manufacturer of barcode scanning equipment. Through this
work, Benoit became deeply involved in the barcode industry’s professional community
and played a leadership role in the trade association AIM (Automatic Identification
Manufacturers), serving as its president in 1992 during a key period of growth and
standardization for barcode technology.
