Extent, Scope, and Content Note 
 The collection comprises 10 cubic ft. of papers produced and collected between 1985
                     and 2008 by Dr. Ruth A. Brandwein,  a university professor and dean emeritus, a consultant,
                     and an author who has been recognized and honored  for her dedication, achievements,
                     and leadership in social welfare and justice education. The papers include  correspondence,
                     documents, and subject files related to women and welfare; family violence; women
                     in administration; organizational and social change; single-parent families; feminist
                     frameworks; the history of U.S. social policy; and international social welfare.
Arrangement and Processing Note
 The papers are arranged in the original order maintained by Ruth A. Brandwein. 
Acidic folders and boxes have been replaced with archival enclosures and housings.

Biographical Note
Ruth A. Brandwein, Dean and Professor Emeritus, Consultant and Author, has been recognized
                     by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in social welfare and justice education.
After earning a Ph.D. in social welfare from Brandeis University in 1978, Dr. Brandwein went on to teach and become involved in various social justice activities. Prior to retiring in 2010, her most recent position had been as the Director of the Social Justice Center at the State University of New York, Stony Brook. She began teaching at the institution in 1981 and served as the Dean of the School of Social Welfare from 1981 to 1989. She was named Belle Spafford Visiting Professor at the University of Utah School of Social Work from 1994 to 1996 and was Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Social Services from 1989 to 1993. Earlier in her career, she was an assistant professor and Chair of the Communications Organization at School of Social Work at Boston University, as well as a research associate at Harvard University and Laboratory Communications Psychiatry. Furthermore, she was a librarian at Brooklyn Public Library, a substitute teacher with the New York City Board of Education, a recreation director of the Seattle Parks Department and an Executive Director of the Central Seattle Commission Council.
In 1960, Dr. Brandwein earned a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Brooklyn College and was inducted to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. A decade later, she received an MSW from the University of Washington and later received a PhD. She has been recognized by the National Association of Social Workers and was named Social Worker of the Year in Suffolk County then in 2018, she received their Lifetime Achievement Award from both her local Sarasota Unit and nationally. For her work, she has received a number of accolades, including the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Washington, a Congressional Award from Congressman Mrazek in Suffolk County, NY and an Honorable Supporter Award from Women on the Job among many other accolades. Throughout her career, Dr. Brandwein maintained professional affiliation and served in various committees and board roles with the National Association of Social Workers, the New York Public Welfare Association and theCouncil of International Programs.
