| VIS at Emergency Preparedness Day
On December 6, the Office of Global Affairs partnered with Healthier U, University
Police, and the Office of Government and Community Relations to host Emergency Preparedness
Day. The event brought in the New York State Citizen Preparedness Corps in conjunction
with the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) to hold a training
course for the Stony Brook community to teach weather-related disaster preparedness. The International Student Success Task Force recognized that international students
are at a particular disadvantage in preparing for natural disasters. The program covered
a broad range of emergency preparedness topics such as developing a family emergency
plan, stocking up on emergency supplies, and registering for NY-Alert, the free statewide
emergency alert system. Along with a free pizza lunch, the 130 participants received free giveaways including
first aid kits, flashlights, and a wallet card with emergency information. NYS Disaster
Preparedness Kits containing key items to assist in the immediate aftermath of a disaster
were also raffled off. All participants received a training certificate upon completion. For more information about emergency preparedness visit www.dhses.ny.gov and to register for NY-Alert visit www.nyalert.gov. |
