lauren brookmeyerLauren Brookmeyer currently serves as Stony Brook University’s Associate Vice President for Federal Relations and Head of the Washington, D.C. Office. In this role, she is the university and hospital’s primary federal lobbyist and liaison, overseeing Stony Brook’s federal relations strategies and advancing institutional priorities across research, higher education, and healthcare policy at the national level.

In 2017, Brookmeyer established the SUNY system’s first university D.C.-based federal relations office, elevating Stony Brook — and the broader SUNY system — into a prominent, proactive force shaping national policy discourse and federal funding advocacy strategies in the nation’s capital. Brookmeyer serves as the 2025 Chair of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) Council on Governmental Affairs (CGA), where she plays a leading role in driving the national advocacy agenda for federal research funding and higher education policy. Her leadership empowers Stony Brook to be an influential force in Washington, D.C., championing the value of public research institutions and public safety-net hospitals.

In 2020, Brookmeyer launched the Stony Brook Advocacy Corps, a program that trains select students to become effective advocates for science and higher education policy. That same year, she was elected President of The Science Coalition (TSC), a national non-partisan organization dedicated to sustaining federal investment in basic scientific research. As TSC President, Brookmeyer penned several op-eds in major Beltway publications emphasizing the critical role universities play in producing groundbreaking technologies and discoveries through federally funded research.

Her contributions have been recognized with several honors, including the 2024 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service, APLU CGA’s Emerging Leader Award in 2020, and the Long Island Association’s “40 Under 40” Award in 2017.

Before joining Stony Brook in 2014, Brookmeyer provided communications and government relations expertise to the New York State Senate and Long Island’s public utility company. She holds a BA in Broadcast Journalism and an MA in Communications and Rhetorical Theory from Hofstra University.
