Nicolls Road Beautification Initiative

Division
Campus Operations & Maintenance (COM)

Overview
The Nicolls Road Beautification Project was launched to enhance the visual appeal of the Stony Brook University campus and surrounding community along Nicolls Road. The project established a natural evergreen barrier to screen parking lots, buildings, and other infrastructure from public view, improving the overall landscape and first impression of the university.

Funding Support

This initiative was made possible through a grant from former NYS Assemblymember and current Suffolk County Legislator Steve Englebright.

Key Highlights

  • Planted over 215 Green Giant Arborvitae trees, each five to six feet tall
  • Created a natural tree barrier along Nicolls Road and near the Ambulatory Surgery Building
  • Enhanced campus aesthetics and community-facing views
  • Supported environmental sustainability and long-term campus beautification efforts

Impact
The new tree plantings significantly enhance the visual landscape along one of the campus’s most prominent corridors. This effort benefits not only the university community but also local residents, pedestrians, and commuters traveling along Nicolls Road. It reflects Stony Brook’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and pride in the campus’s appearance.
