Tokufumi "Fumi" Kato is a managing director at Neuberger Berman, where he serves as head of portfolio construction and risk management and co-head of Macro Research for the multi-asset investment strategies team. In this role, he leads day-to-day portfolio management, portfolio construction, asset allocation, risk management, and cross-asset class research, and drives investment processes and idea generation. He is also a member of the firm’s Asset Allocation Committee and Model Risk Subcommittee.

A proud alumnus, Fumi earned his BS in Physics and Mathematics with honors, and an MA and PhD in Physics. As an undergraduate, he conducted research with the Nucleon Decay and Neutrino (NN) group, contributing to both the K2K and Super-Kamiokande experiments. His graduate research continued with the Super-Kamiokande project, culminating in his 2007 doctoral dissertation, "Tau Neutrino Appearance via Neutrino Oscillations in Atmospheric Neutrinos."

Deeply committed to giving back to his alma mater, Fumi established the Fumi Kato Student Excellence Fund in Physics in 2012 and, alongside his wife, the Fumi and Hikaru Kato Endowed Fund for Excellence in Physics in 2024. In recognition of his professional achievements and contributions to the university community, he was named a Stony Brook 40 Under Forty honoree in 2017.

Fumi also serves on the Board of Directors of Social Capital Initiatives, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to empowering individuals to realize their full potential. He lives with his wife and their daughter and son in New Jersey.
