Networking

Networking is the process of meeting people, having conversations, exchanging information, and building relationships over time. At Stony Brook University, networking empowers students to gain career insights, discover opportunities, and strengthen their professional communities.

How To Start Networking

Student Networking
Informational Interviews

Informational interviewing is a powerful way to explore careers through real conversations. Think of yourself as a curious journalist, gathering insights from someone’s professional experience. You can begin with people you already know or connect with Stony Brook University faculty, staff, and alumni through the Micro-Mentoring Program.

Build Your Handshake Profile

Your Handshake student profile is your launchpad to job and internship opportunities. At Stony Brook University, students who complete all three core sections, experience, skills, and interests, greatly increase their visibility to recruiters.

Creating a LinkedIn Profile

LinkedIn is a professional platform where you showcase your experience, skills, and accomplishments. It helps you connect with people in your field, learn from others, and explore organizations of interest. Be sure to add your LinkedIn link to your resume, follow companies, join career-related groups, and stay engaged with industry conversations.

Attending Employer and Networking Events

Stony Brook University offers both virtual and in-person networking events where students can meet employers, alumni, and professionals from various industries. These events are an excellent opportunity to ask questions, hear advice, and make lasting impressions. Before attending, practice your elevator pitch and bring copies of your resume. Attending employer/networking events

Employers and alumni participate in networking events, online and on/off campus. This is a great opportunity to connect with professionals in your field, ask questions about their careers, and hear advice they have to share.  Before attending any networking event, make sure to practice your pitch to impress potential contacts.
