CV

Dr. Beras’s work is grounded in theoretical traditions that span Sociocultural Anthropology, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and Black Studies. In her research, she interrogates how processes of state formation and notions of nationhood are propelled by antiblack ideologies and practices, while simultaneously producing areas of liminality and indeterminacy that provide apertures for Black life. More specifically, Dr. Beras pays attention to configurations of time, space, relationships, and ideologies that inform daily life for people living across the Dominican Republic and who are entangled in a hostile yet wanting environment where survival, with its myriad meanings, is the ultimate goal. Formerly a student affairs and catering sales professional, Dr. Beras obtained her PhD in Anthropology from Cornell University. She is from the Bronx, NY and a graduate of the New York City public school system.
