Lighting Technologies
PIs: Michael Dudley and Juan Raja
The Center for Crystal Growth at Stony Brook University (SBU), directed by Prof. Michael Dudley, combines state-of -theart growth facilities with sophisticated characterization instrumentation to tackle the most challenging problems in crystal growth of advanced materials. Currently, designing better strategies to grow high-quality wide band-gap semiconductor materials, such as aluminum nitride, gallium nitride, and zinc oxide, is one of the Center's primary areas of research. Bulk single crystals and thin films of these materials find application as substrates and active layers in the fabrication of shortwave-length iight emitting diodes (LED), which are fundamental to the development of costeffective solid-state lighting technologies. Replacing existing illumination technologies with solid-state lighting ones will have a tremendous social and economical impact by potentially reducing the world's energy consumption by up to 10%.
