Farmingdale State College
Dr. Keen became President of Farmingdale State College-SUNY in January 2007. Prior to that he served for two years as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Farmingdale, and from 1999 to 2005 as Special Assistant to the System Provost in the State University of New York central offices where he was responsible for System-wide initiatives in the areas of teacher education and University collaboration with the state’s K-12 schools. He was liaison for the SUNY system to the New York City public schools and led the development of the SUNY Urban Teacher Education Center in the city. From 2002-2005 he served on the New York State Board of Regents’ Professional Standards and Practices Board for Education. He served from 1998-1999 as Interim President at SUNY College at Old Westbury, where he led the development of several administrative reforms and college planning efforts. From 1994 to 1998 he was Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at York College in the City University of New York. He began in 1976 as an Assistant Professor of Biological Science at SUNY Cortland and served during the next twelve years as Associate Professor, Professor, Coordinator of the Environmental Science Program and, from 1983 to 1988, as Chair of the Department of Biological Science. He served for six years, until 1994, as Dean of Arts and Sciences at SUNY Cortland. His teaching and research areas are in ecology, environmental science, aquatic biology and biostatistics. His research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the SUNY Research Foundation, the University of Virginia’s Biological Station Research Program and other agencies, and has yielded over twenty refereed research papers. He is the author of several short biographies of prominent figures in science, technology and education as well as articles on various topics in higher education. He has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship, a U.S. Public Health Service Fellowship, and a Fellowship from the German Academic Exchange Service. He serves on the boards of the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center, Action Long Island, Route 110 Partnership Corporation, the German Academic Exchange Service Alumni Association and he is the Chair of the Presidents’ Council of the NCAA Division III Skyline Athletic Conference. He holds memberships in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Council on Education, The Scientific Research Society of Sigma Xi, The Nature Conservancy, and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. He earned the B.A. with a major in Biology and a minor in German from Pikeville College, the M.S. in physiology and ecology from Eastern Kentucky University and the Ph.D. from Kent State University in ecology.
